City upgrades mothers breastfeeding lounge for staff

05 August 2025

In light of World Breastfeeding Week this week, the City opened its recently upgraded Mothers Breastfeeding lounge at the Cape Town Civic Centre. Read more below:

The expansion of the City’s Mother’s Lounge offers improved comfort and support for breastfeeding mothers who are entitled to take 30 minutes a day to express breastmilk for a period of six months. For many women, this means having to use bathrooms or their offices at the workplace. The City wants its employees to be able to continue with breastfeeding once they return to work, hence this safe and private space. The City is currently exploring the possibility of having more of these facilities available beyond the Cape Town Civic Centre.

The City’s EAP and Wellness department also offers 24/7 counselling and support services to assist mothers in managing the physical and emotional aspects of breastfeeding and returning to work. This is another way the City prioritises the comfort and wellbeing of its working mothers.
